Since 1997, Faina Shtern, M.D., has been a founding member of the Board of Directors and
president and CEO of the AdMeTech Foundation, whose mission is to expedite development and implementation of advanced imaging technologies for early diagnosis and minimallyinvasive treatment of prostate cancer. AdMeTech Foundation is committed to shifting prostate cancer care from the era of blind diagnosis and treatment to the future of imageguided, minimally-invasive and precisely-targeted interventions, performed in an outpatient setting with minimal discomfort, complications and cost.
Dr. Shtern was the Director of Research at the Department of Radiology, Children's Hospital Boston (CHB), Harvard Medical School, from November 2000 until March 2008, where her leadership resulted in the establishment of a multi-million dollar research program dedicated to innovative technology - based solutions for improved patient care in children.
From January 1990 to October 2000, Dr. Shtern worked for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, where she served as chief of the Diagnostic Imaging Research Branch of the National Cancer Institute – a leading unit of the U.S. government that supports and administers radiology research. In 1992, she was appointed as Chair of the NIH Diagnostic Radiology Research Committee. Since March 1997, she has also served as Associate Director for Research and Technology Affairs at the U.S. Public Health Office on Women's Health, Office of the Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services, where she organized and directed the Federal Multi-Agency Consortium on Imaging and Other Technologies to Improve Women’s Health. In these positions, she provided leadership for the development of large-scale, international, multi-institutional and multi-disciplinary research programs for the development and implementation of innovative imaging technologies for improved early detection and treatment of cancer. Her primary focus was to expedite the advancement of breast cancer imaging technologies including: digital mammography, breast MRI; image-guided stereotactic needle biopsies, improved ultrasound, and other methods that have recently been widely accepted as state-of-the-artpatient care.
After receiving her M.D. from Chemovets Medical School in the former USSR and completing her residency in internal medicine at Staten Island Hospital in New York City, Dr. Shtern was appointed a Clinical and Research Fellow at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School, where she subsequently became a member of the faculty. Dr. Shtern has provided leadership for and participated in numerous scientific committees, advisory groups, academic workshops and conferences in the United States and throughout the world. She also has organized and participated in briefings to Members of Congress, senior government and industry officials (including U.S. President’s Cancer Panel), the media and the general public.
